Islands trip, Murano, Burano, Torcello.

Murano, Burano & Torcello

Murano is the second island in the Venetian Lagoon, located north-east of Venice, and was, like the island of Torcello and Burano, one of the major centers founded by the inhabitants of Altino in the year 453, when they fled from invasions of Germans.

Murano  has a Grand Canal, that runs through the 7 islands who compose it. All the glass furnaces are in Murano, except Orsoni, the famous glass mosaic maker.

Historic & Beautiful

The inhabitants of Altino, escaping from barbarian invasion, find refuge in the islands of the lagoon, giving them the names of the six doors of their thrown over city: Murano, Mazzorbo, Burano, Torcello, Ammiana e Costanziaca.

The name "Burano" arise from "Porta Boreana", the northern door of their city.

From the first houses who were build with walls made of woven canes and afterwards plastered with mud, you will not find nothing, later these raw houses started to be made of bricks.

Since the time of Venetian RepublicBurano had only 8000 poor inhabitants , nearly 3000 today, predominantly fishermen and farmers. Thanks to the craft of lace workers, the island grew economically, exporting its laces all over the world.

Take the time to visit these islands, and the beautiful Torcello's church byzantine mosaics.

Torcello and Burano

Easily accessible from Burano with the ACTV ferry, Torcello is different of any island. Along canal that leads to the square, you are immersed slowly in a landscape that seems remained to the period of the early Bizance Empire and will come across the famous "Devil's Bridge", so called because, according to a legend, was built in one night by the devil to win a bet.

A little further ahead a second bridge leads to the town square, which is still entirely in clay and gravel.

A stone throne at the center of this area, called "Attila's Throne", is erroneously attributed to the famous leader of the Huns. The Palazzo del Consiglio, built during the fourteenth century was the seat of government of the island, and nowadays is the Torcello's Museum, whith interesting items from the numerous archaeological remains found on the island from the Late Latin, Byzantine and Medieval ages.

The Museum of Torcello can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday morning from 10.30 to 12.30pm and from 14.00 to 16.00pm

  • Walk on the right side of the streets, always! The locals are not in holidays...
  • Don't stop on the bridges, they important part of the circulation and it's illegal. Well, if you see you are not preventing the traffic, stay the time to admire the view and make some photos. Then, leave the bridge free. The locals will thank you!
